How many pounds of beans are in a sack of green (unroasted) coffee?


On the wholesale market almost all (unroasted) green coffee is sold by the burlap sack (exported bags). Coffee futures contracts in the US trade on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange & New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) and are quoted per pound.  Each coffee futures contract represents 37,500 pounds of unroasted (green) coffee beans.  On the Tokyo Grain Exchange one contract is 5000 kilograms, and the NYSE Euronext a contract is 10 tonnes.

The standard weight of a sack of coffee for export purposes will vary by the country and region that it's grown:

70 kilograms (154 lbs)  - Columbia and Bolivia coffee
69 kilograms (152 lbs)  - Latin American coffee
60 kilograms (132 lbs)  - Africa and Asian coffee
50 kilograms (110 lbs)  - India and Yemen coffee
45.6 kilograms (100 lbs) - Hawaii and Puerto Rico coffee
