What is an e-mini futures contract?

E-minis are a type of futures contract that trades at a smaller proportion of a standard futures contract.  For example the e-mini S&P 500 contract, one of the most popular, trades at 1/5th the size of a standard S&P futures contract.  The smaller size allows individual investors greater flexibility and affordability to speculate or hedge risk in their personal portfolios.

E-mini's are traded electronically on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME).
